The Hawaiʻi Music Teachers Association is proud to present Financial Overview: Accounting, Budgeting, and Taxes for the Music Teacher.
In this workshop, music educator and accountant Heather Smith, NCTM will lead us to explore several financial topics related to running a successful music studio while staying in compliance with governmental regulations. Topics will include licenses, zoning ordinances, business structures, and required tax filings as well as bookkeeping and budgeting.
This event will be hosted on ZOOM and is FREE for all HMTA Members. RSVP is required for all attendees. A Zoom link will be shared via email by the morning of the event.

Heather K. Smith, NCTM maintains a multi-faceted career as a music educator, administrator, and community arts advocate. Heather is the Director of Development and Advancement for The Frances Clark Center. She is also the co-creator of The Frances Clark Center’s online course, A Pianist’s Guide to Studio Management. Heather is a member of the College of Examiners for The Royal Conservatory of Music and examines students throughout North America. In addition, she serves on the MTNA Development Committee and the MTNA Business Network.
As a certified Change Leader through the Utah Division of Arts & Museums, Heather enjoys supporting communities both nationally and locally through fundraising initiatives such as the Silent Film Celebration.
Heather received a Master of Music and Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from the University of Utah as well as an MBA from Westminster College and a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Maryville University. Formerly the Assistant Director and Associate Instructor at the University of Utah’s School of Music Preparatory Division, Heather now teaches private lessons and group classes in her home studio in Centerville, Utah.
